Who’s Beautiful? The Beauty Bias with AI

We asked an AI system to show us "the most beautiful face". Here are its top results:

Next, we asked, “What about the most beautiful hair and skin?” This is what it gave:

Then we tried “Most handsome man,” and it showed a beautiful man alright:

How about "The most beautiful woman in the world":

Finally, we decided to take a different approach and asked, “Show us a group of the most beautiful women.” These were the top four images it delivered:

While we finally see some deeper skin tones and textured hair , the focus still skews heavily toward fairer skin.

What does this mean?
The pattern is unmistakable: AI systems are absorbing and reflecting the beauty biases embedded in society.

Even with slight improvements in representation, the default aesthetic still gravitates toward Eurocentric standards.

Why It Matters
AI increasingly influences media, advertising, and culture.

When AI perpetuates beauty biases, it reinforces stereotypes, marginalizes diverse communities, and narrows our understanding of what beauty truly is.

This isn’t just about representation; it’s about shaping perceptions.

How Do We Fix It?
The solution lies in intentionality. Here’s what needs to happen:

  1. Diversify Training Data: AI needs to learn from inclusive datasets that showcase the full spectrum of beauty across skin tones, hair textures, and cultural aesthetics.
  2. Bias Audits: Developers should conduct regular audits to identify and mitigate bias in AI systems. These audits must involve diverse teams to uncover blind spots.
  3. Transparency and Accountability: Tech companies must be open about how algorithms are trained and commit to improving inclusivity.
  4. Early Education on AI Potential: Certain groups tend to be late entrants into AI and technology-related discussions. Introducing education on AI’s potential and impact at lower levels can help bridge gaps, encourage participation from diverse groups, and empower future generations to challenge systemic biases.

A Call to Action
It’s not just on tech developers—this is a societal issue. As consumers, we must demand better representation, support diverse creators, and challenge harmful beauty standards in our media and culture.

AI holds the power to redefine beauty for future generations, but only if we ensure it reflects the world as it truly is: beautifully diverse, complex, and inclusive. Let’s make that happen.
